In an exclusive interview with Tennis Majors, Ivan Ljubicic, Roger Federer’s former coach between 2016 and 2022, revealed how Federer’s genius lies in finding joy in everything he does.
The Croatian explained: “His genius also lies in finding joy in everything he does, even in press conferences, meeting people, spending time with sponsors – he’s always enjoyed it. It doesn’t necessarily come automatically, but he finds one way to enjoy it.
And I think that’s the key to why he can last so long and actually have fun. And tennis, that’s something else. I mean, whenever he sees the racquet, whatever the racquet, he would pick it up and start swinging. You know, his love of hitting that ball is just too big.”
Ljubicic about Federer
Ljubicic also revealed what was the only thing that could stop Roger Federer.
He said: “The only way to stop him was when his body couldn’t go on anymore. He loves tennis so much that he would never have made the decision to stop because he didn’t want to anymore.
That would never have happened. That was the only way to stop him. His skills didn’t flag and his physical condition might slow him down a little over time, but his genius still kept him at the top. The beginning was difficult as he injured his meniscus in his second tournament and was undergoing his first surgery had to undergo.
But in hindsight maybe it was lucky for us to have time to work together and get to know each other even better. Certainly I had awkward moments where people thought I was just hired because I’m his friend and stuff like that. But of course he was happy that the results came.”
