The Incredible Love Story of Director Ezz El-Din Zulfikar and Faten Hamama

Today marks the birthday of director Ezz El-Din Zulfikar, or “the director of romance,” as he was nicknamed because of his distinction in presenting romantic films that are still timeless and among the most important films of Egyptian cinema.

There are many stories and anecdotes in the life of Izz al-Din Zulfikar, perhaps the most notable of which is his story with Faten Hamama, as he was her first husband and the father of her daughter, Nadia.

The story of the marriage and divorce of Ezz El-Din Zulfikar and Faten Hamama was quick and strange. Even after their separation, he continued to have the utmost respect for her and flirt with her.

Ezz El-Din Zulfikar and Faten Hamama’s relationship began in 1948 when they co-starred in the movie “Eternity”, which is the only film in which Ezz El-Din Zulfikar starred and directed. A great love story arose between them, and Ezz El-Din decided to marry her.

Ezz El-Din Zulfikar proposed to Faten Hamama’s father to ask her for marriage. She was 17 years old at the time, while he was 29 years old, that is, 12 years older than her. Her father rejected this request and said that his daughter was still too young to marry, but the great love between them prompted them to marry secretly.

Izz al-Din Zulfiqar said in his memoirs, published by “Nasf al-Dunya” magazine in 2000, about his marriage to Faten Hamama: “We got married on an adventure. We were working on the movie (Eternity) and the marriage contract was held in Fouad al-Jazairli’s villa. The witnesses to the contract were Jalil al-Bandari and Anis Hamed, and the reason was “In secret, her family objected to the marriage.” Faten Hamama’s father felt that she had become responsible for her decisions, so he accepted the matter after that.

Faten Hamama’s marriage lasted for 6 years, and they gave birth to their daughter, “Nadia,” and they worked together in more than one job, until the divorce occurred. Regarding the reason for their separation, Ezz El-Din Zulfikar said: “The feud between me and her began when I assigned the lead in a movie to another artist,” explains Faten Al-Inaya. Acting as care for the heroine, we ended up with a divorce. It was a sound decision in which not a single bullet was fired at the reputation of any of us. What I imagined as love was gone, and what remained between me and Faten, the eternal friendship.”

In contrast to many who preferred to stay away after the separation, cooperation continued between Ezz El-Din Zulfikar and Faten Hamama, and they separated in 1954. Three years later, they collaborated in the film “The Path of Hope” in 1957, then in 1995 they presented the film “Among the Ruins” together, and he participated in the film “Among the Ruins.” The film “River of Love” in 1960.
