Fuchs was the first javelin thrower to throw the javelin of the old design beyond 60 meters. At the end of her career in 1980, she was only four centimeters short of the 70-meter mark, throwing the javelin 69.96 meters.
After the end of her sports career, she was active in politics and was also elected to the parliament.
In 1994, Fuchs admitted that she had used steroids during her career. Her second husband and coach, Karl Hellmann, was a well-known doping specialist in the German Democratic Republic.
