The Increasingly Political Nature of Energy Protests and Miners’ Strikes

Radoslav Ribarski, the deputy from the PP-DB and deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy, believes that the protests of energy workers and miners look more and more political. In front of the BNR, he explained this with the approaching local elections.

“For many months a solution was sought, many conversations were held, many public discussions. Now you see that a conversation is also being abandoned. So it seems increasingly political considering that in view of the upcoming local elections,” he commented.

According to him, 3 public discussions were held in Stara Zagora alone. According to him, the long postponement of this issue is at the root of things.

“Already at this critical moment, when we are about to lose again some funds that are vital for this region to go through this transition that is emerging anyway. It is visible even now. And right now it is reduced the extraction of the mines, the thermal power plants are not working at their full capacity. This is what reduces the fresh income of the resource, and the salaries of these people have to be paid. This territorial plan is precisely to deal with these consequences of increasing carbon emissions and the lack of market for this energy, which in the current situation turns out to be unsellable and they accumulate losses”.

Rybarski reminded that the other countries have submitted their territorial plans and are already benefiting from the allocated funds by entering the economy by region:

“These concerns of the people there are not as big as with us, who wait until the last moment, the last deadline, with a lot of pressure to submit our plans. There are a number of opportunities that the EU provides to help when employment is lost in such regions “.

For him, the tension is inexplicable. Territorial plans, together with the funds under the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, are a resource that Bulgaria should take advantage of, the MP is emphatic.

“Otherwise we have to deal with the consequences of the commitments that were made with the ‘green deal’ years before the PP came into being. We are now seeing the consequences. This is not about who is in power. This is a long-term policy that someone refused to lead in the right direction”.

The rulers and the EC are thinking about investments in the regions, Ribarski was categorical. According to him, the plan aims to channel fresh resources into industries that need to be developed and to avoid shocks and shocks in the event of a sharp reduction in production.

“Let the dialogue continue, but with clear and specific demands, in line with the regulation that territorial plans follow. Unsubstantiated demands, such as the capacity mechanism that was wasted 4-5 years ago, at the moment is a completely different battle that does not affect territorial plans and it will have to be conducted at another level. There are no closing dates anywhere in the territorial plans. The effects of the decarbonisation of the whole of Europe are already visible in the region and it is high time to face the problems, not postpone them once again.” the deputy chairman of the parliamentary energy committee also noted.
