[손기정 일중한의원 원장] “Director, doesn’t prostatitis only occur with age? “I’m still in my 30s…” There are quite a few cases of young male patients who visit the clinic making complaints like this. These are male prostatitis patients who were diagnosed with prostatitis at a young age, took antibiotics, and then came to the author’s hospital after much questioning when the symptoms recurred.
Many men believe that prostatitis occurs only in their 50s or 60s, but this is not true. There seems to be confusion because the symptoms are similar to benign prostatic hyperplasia, which occurs when prostate tissue proliferates excessively with age. This is because both diseases have similar symptoms, including urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, residual urine, and urine retention, and sexual dysfunction. However, prostatitis is an enlarged prostate
Unlike Ki-Jeong Son, director of Il-Chinese Oriental Medical Clinic, the prostate is swollen due to inflammation, and pain symptoms such as heavy and stiff pain in the perineum, pelvic pain, genital pain, and ejaculatory pain are characteristic. Men can notice the difference in the disease if they pay a little attention.
Having treated patients with prostatitis for over 30 years, what I have noticed over the past few years is that the number of younger patients is steadily increasing. Chronic prostatitis occurs in men of all ages, from those in their 20s to those in their 50s and 60s who are actively involved in social activities. Prostatitis is a disease that does not discriminate against age. In fact, according to the author’s survey, people in their 20s and 30s accounted for more than 4 out of 10 patients, or 43.4% of the total, and unfortunately, some of the patients are teenagers who are still in their adolescence.
As previously explained, prostatitis is swelling of the prostate and its surroundings caused by inflammation of the prostate tissue due to various causes. It appears accompanied by pain symptoms such as lower abdomen and perineal pain, pelvic pain, and testicular pain, and urinary symptoms such as frequent urination and residual urine. The majority of patients complain of systemic symptoms such as decreased sexual function, premature ejaculation, and chronic fatigue, and their quality of life is greatly reduced. Additionally, prostatitis is usually associated with a bacterial infection and is easily mistaken for an infectious disease such as a sexually transmitted disease. There are many cases where it starts with an initial bacterial infection, but in most cases, bacteria can be treated with early use of antibiotics. However, uncomfortable symptoms such as pain still remain, which is called non-bacterial prostatitis. In fact, 80-90% of all patients who visit the hospital have non-bacterial prostatitis. It can also occur without sexual contact, which is proof that prostatitis can appear at any age.
If not treated properly, prostatitis frequently recurs due to various factors such as overwork, decreased immunity, drinking, and lack of exercise. There are many cases in which patients who developed the disease in their 20s or 30s have repeated recurrences for 4 to 5 years or more and continue to suffer until middle age. It is important to start treatment quickly when symptoms appear, but to be patient. If acute bacterial prostatitis occurs in the early stages, treatment with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers can be effective. It is important to take all prescribed medications to ensure that bacteria and inflammation disappear and to manage your daily life thoroughly.
However, regardless of age, if recurrence occurs more than two or three times, it can become chronic, so caution is required. Most chronic patients have impaired function of the bladder or kidneys, organs related to the prostate, due to long-term urinary problems, pain, and stress. If urine is not discharged properly and remains in the bladder, the bladder’s squeezing power decreases, which in turn leads to a decline in the function of the kidneys, spleen, etc. At this time, systematic and fundamental oriental medical treatment to prevent recurrence, such as direct inflammation removal, restoration of organ function, treatment for antibiotic use and resistance, and strengthening the immune system, can be very effective.
