A sharp increase in counterfeit BGN 50 banknotes is reported by the BNB. In the second quarter of the year, 1,155 counterfeit BGN 50 banknotes were caught, compared to only 200 in the first quarter, data from the Central Bank show. Here we are talking about fake banknotes that have circulated in the monetary circulation and have been seized.
The number of counterfeit BGN 50 banknotes caught is more than 24 times greater than the counterfeits caught in the same quarter last year, when they were only 48. There has not been such a large amount of seized counterfeit coins since the first half of 2010.
Over the past 10 years, the counterfeit 50 BGN banknotes caught are most often less than 100 per quarter. There are several quarters with between 100 and 260 counterfeit notes seized. And now the number of fakes is increasing sharply.
It is noteworthy that the fraudsters target the BGN 50 banknotes. For the other banknotes, there are much fewer counterfeits caught. For the second quarter, their number is: 5 BGN 5 banknotes, 17 BGN 10 banknotes, 67 BGN 20 banknotes and 3 BGN 100 banknotes.
BGN 50 banknotes have grown rapidly in recent years and are now the most frequently used. They have a relatively high value, and at the same time, people are not as attentive to them as they are to stoves. That’s why counterfeiters are targeting precisely the fifty-dollar bills.
As of the end of August, the total number of banknotes in circulation was 583 million, according to BNB data. Of these, the 50 BGN banknotes have the largest share of 41.8%, which increased by 6% over the year. BGN 100 banknotes are in second place in terms of number. Within a year, they grew the most – by over 14 percent and reached 123 million pieces. With the increase in prices, we now carry the most BGN 50 and BGN 100 banknotes in our wallets. The number of banknotes with smaller denominations is even decreasing. In a year, the BGN 20 banknotes decreased by over 18% and reached 105 million pieces. Decimal coins decreased by 8.7% to 81.3 million pieces. BGN 5 banknotes also decreased to 31.4 million pieces.
