In the first half of this year, the demand for short-term car rental has increased in all Baltic countries. In Latvia, the increase reached 25% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the data collected by the car rental and full-service leasing service provider “Avis”. Residents are increasingly making reservations at the last minute and prefer SUVs.
The increase in the volume of short-term car rentals shows that residents are planning their trips more and more actively. In addition, growth in rental days has increased by 28%, indicating that people are increasingly taking longer trips. It is interesting that a large number of people still postpone making a reservation until the last minute. Compared to previous years, a particularly large increase can be observed for reservations made only one to seven days in advance.
“Such a trend initially emerged during the pandemic, when due to restrictions it was difficult to predict whether the plans would succeed. However, the data shows that the habit of booking a car at the last minute has persisted – people are used to flexibility in their lives and demand it from service providers as well,” he says. Daina Kantāne, head of the “Avis” leasing department.
SUVs or off-road cars are still the most popular – every third rental and leasing customer chooses this class of cars. Customers prefer SUVs not only because they are suitable for driving on roads with different surfaces, but also because they are roomy and comfortable, suitable for families with children and companies of adults.
In the first half of the year, there was also a 20% increase in long-term rental services for a month or more with a fixed monthly payment – “Avis Flex”. Customers of this service also occasionally use the opportunity to change the class of the car, adapting the vehicle to the needs of the trip.
“Although the demand has increased and other positive trends have emerged, we remain vigilant, because the economic situation in general shows a recession in the market. Citizens and companies have become much more cautious and take decisions that require greater financial investments much more carefully. The first half of the year has been challenging for all sectors, taking into account the global security situation and last year’s electricity crisis. The rapid increase in the Euribor rate also greatly affects companies in Latvia and elsewhere,” he explains D. Kantane.
