The Increase of Russian Asylum Seekers in the United States Since the Mobilization Began

More than 57,000 Russians have sought asylum in the United States since the mobilization began.

From October 2022 to September 2023, 57,163 Russian citizens crossed the US border to seek asylum. Such data were published by the border department of the country.

This number significantly exceeds similar figures from previous years. In fiscal year 2021 – from October 2020 to September 2021 – 4.5 times fewer Russians applied for asylum in the US – only 13,240 people. A year later, this figure almost tripled to 36,271 people.

The increase in the number of asylum seekers began after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reaching its peak after the announcement of mobilization in the Russian Federation in November and December.

During these months, 6,931 and 9,227 refugees crossed the border, respectively.
