The level of cybercrime in Turkey has increased due to the influx of migrant hackers – Russian programmers who left Russia after the start of mobilization, the Financial Times reports, citing sources in the Turkish police and cybersecurity experts.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, migrant hackers initially engaged in petty online fraud, teaming up with local hackers to sell stolen data on the European market and launder income.
However, Turkish police recently decided to open an investigation as Russian and local hackers began to form groups that exploited each other’s strengths.
Thus, a cybersecurity specialist who wished to remain anonymous told the newspaper that he infiltrated a Telegram group in which Russians trained their Turkish colleagues to work with large amounts of data, and they, through their contacts in Western Europe, secured profitable deals.
In other similar chats, the source claims, the hackers discussed ways to convert stolen cryptocurrency into Turkish lira and ways to buy real estate to obtain Turkish citizenship.
“There are no outstanding hackers among them, but they are very productive, and they have learned to automate processes very well – their productivity is growing rapidly,” the publication’s interlocutor concluded.
According to the newspaper’s sources, hackers collect data using the Redline malware, which apparently bypasses the protection of most antiviruses, writes FT. The main feature of Redline is the collection of cookies – pieces of code that allow the user to be identified.
In turn, information security specialist Osher Assor from Auren Cyber Israel noted that hackers regularly post new data packages collected over the past few hours in specialized Telegram groups, which makes them even more valuable.
Mobilization in Russia began at the end of September 2022 and, according to statements by Russian authorities, ended in early November. During mobilization, many Russians left the country. There is no exact data on the number of those who left, but it is assumed that we are talking about tens or hundreds of thousands of people.
“For now, my plan is to panic and borrow money.” Many Russians who left because of the war continue to earn money in rubles. “Paper” tells how their lives were affected by (another) fall of the Russian currency
