The Increase in Diesel Prices in the Czech Republic and its Impact on Transport Companies

The increase in the price of diesel accelerated when the excise duty on diesel rose by 1.50 crowns per liter from the beginning of August. Its price has increased by more than four crowns since then. At the beginning of the month, according to CCS data, a liter cost an average of 33.95 crowns. From August, the excise duty on diesel returned to the level valid until last June, when the government pushed for its reduction due to high prices at the time, mainly to relieve transporters.

According to the director of the 4Trans company, Jaroslav Ton, the increase in the price of diesel above 38 crowns per liter is a problem precisely for companies engaged in transport, for which fuel is one of the main cost items.

However, despite the long rise in prices, fuel in the Czech Republic is still cheaper than last year at the same time, when it rose after the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine. Gasoline is 76 halers per liter cheaper than a year ago, motorists paid almost seven crowns more for a liter of diesel then.

Multi-month highs in Prague

Ton pointed out that last week the price of diesel on the Rotterdam stock exchange remained stable and held at the level of the turn of July and August. “From the current data, there is no reason for a long-term increase in fuel prices, whether for gasoline or diesel,” he said. According to him, the rise in prices is at an end. “In the coming months, it is possible to expect a drop in fuel prices of up to one crown, both for gasoline and for diesel, compared to the current situation,” he added.

The cheapest fuel is now filled by drivers in the South Bohemian Region, where a liter of gasoline costs 39.30 CZK on average. They sell diesel there for an average of 37.55 CZK/l. On the contrary, gas stations in Prague are the most expensive in the long term. A liter of gasoline costs 40.88 CZK on average in the capital, and a liter of diesel costs 39.29 CZK.
