The Inaccuracy of Sign Language on TikTok: Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community Worries about Misinterpretations Spreading on the Platform

On TikTok in the United States, many people adapt the songs they dance to in sign language. But this fad comes with its share of errors, sometimes making some lyrics incomprehensible to the deaf and hard of hearing, who worry about seeing these inaccuracies spread on the platform, according to the Washington Post.

A bad placement of the hands or a certain movement can completely distort the translation by creating an incomprehensible sign or completely changing the meaning of a word. An example cited is that of content creator Scott Berends, 1 million followers on TikTok, who signed the word “ trouble » (« worry », in French) by another movement which means… « awesome » (« amazing “, in French). On the social network, several interpreters in American sign language or deaf and hard of hearing people have pointed out this phenomenon.
