The defender of the second division ice hockey team from Crimmitschau impresses in defense and offense. The 27-year-old reveals how the next points can be scored in Rosenheim and against Krefeld. Despite the loss of two top performers.
Crimmitschau.
With three goals and three assists, Max Balinson is the highest-scoring defender at second division ice hockey team Eisspiraten Crimmitschau. The German-Canadian, who celebrated his 27th birthday on Thursday, impresses with clever positional play in his own third and is involved in many offensive actions in the opponent’s third. “I had a good start in Crimmitschau. The coach, supervisor and teammates give me self-confidence,” says the left-handed shooter, who is on the ice in Germany for the first time. Looking at personal statistics is not a priority for Max Balinson. “The individual points are a bonus, but I am very happy that I can win ice hockey games with Crimmitschau in front of incredible fans,” says the 1.85 meter tall and 90 kilogram defender.
The Ice Pirates, who are in third place, will meet the Starbulls Rosenheim on Friday (from 7.30 p.m.) and the Krefeld Pinguine on Sunday (from 5 p.m.). Rosenheim ranks eighth. Krefeld takes twelfth place. Max Balinson expects two opponents to “play disciplined ice hockey.” He makes it clear: “We have to stick to our system. If we want to get six points, it is important to act confidently and relentlessly in front of our goalkeeper.” Christian Schneider, who has been able to show good performances recently, will probably be in the West Saxony team again on Friday. Goalkeeper Oleg Shilin is still out due to injury, as is striker Scott Feser.
Most recently, the Ice Pirates team was unable to quite match the performances shown at the start of the season in the 3-2 win after extra time against Freiburg and the 0-2 defeat in Regensburg. Max Balinson and Co. somehow lacked the looseness and security. There was a higher error rate in the game structure. An assessment that coach Jussi Tuores does not share. “Our performance against Freiburg and in Regensburg was no better or worse than on the first four matchdays,” says the coach, who also addresses the referees’ controversial decisions. They denied a goal from Colin Smith against Freiburg and a goal from Henri Kanninen in Regensburg. The fact that Kanninen’s goal was actually scored correctly was also admitted by those responsible for DEL 2 in a statement on their homepage on Wednesday. “We were a bit unlucky because the two goals were disallowed,” said Jussi Tuores, who is not planning any major changes to the line-up in the attacking ranks.
Even big names in the ranks of the opponents don’t upset the Ice Pirate cracks. The Krefeld Pinguins have a defender in Christian Ehrhoff who can look back on 862 appearances in the National Hockey League (NHL) and thus in the best league in the world. The 41-year-old decided to make a comeback in the summer. “The fact that some players with NHL experience are playing in the DEL 2 is remarkable on paper. It’s an honor to be on the ice with someone who has played in the NHL for so long,” says Max Balinson, who is completely cleverly directs the puck towards the Ice Pirates team. “We have a strong and motivated team that won’t be intimidated by anything. You shouldn’t forget that some of my teammates have already played at that level,” says Max Balinson, referring to Tobias Lindberg and Colin Smith. (court)
