The Importance of Youth Councils in Empowering Young People in the UAE: Insights from Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Youth

Mubarak Al-Nakhi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture and Youth, affirmed that youth councils in the country play an important role in empowering young people and pushing them to contribute to the service of the country, pointing to the keenness of the UAE leadership to place youth at the forefront of its attention.

Al-Nakhi indicated, during the meeting that was held yesterday morning at the Abu Dhabi Creative Center, to honor the members of the local councils (the fifth session 2020-2023), that the United Arab Emirates views youth as the most important force and the most precious element for building the future of the country, and from here it was keen to give them the utmost attention. And put youth empowerment efforts at the forefront of its interests, and gave the highest priority to meeting the needs and requirements of this important segment of society. He explained that the Ministry of Culture and Youth has implemented the country’s vision of establishing youth councils in all emirates of the country, with the aim of drawing up comprehensive development plans, targeting youth, and bringing their capabilities to the various files and issues that concern them and society.

He expressed his appreciation for the initiatives and achievements of the local councils during the last session that enhance the process of empowering Emirati national youth, and express their ambitions and ability to create opportunities. Pointing out that these initiatives are the fruit of a wise vision that called for establishing an integrated approach in empowering youth and being proud of their national contributions.

Al-Nakhi said: “In our meeting, we stress the importance of youth councils and their vital role, as they are a link between the young generation and decision-makers in the country. Thanks to your efforts, we are able to contribute to leading the country to new horizons of development and prosperity. We are proud of your visions, and we are proud of your thought and awareness that have been rooted in the various files that you have worked on. We appreciate your efforts over the past period. And the next sessions will be more advanced and more aware.”

The members of the local councils presented a presentation of their various initiatives, stressing the great support they received from the leadership, which constituted a strong incentive for them to work and strive to contribute effectively to the progress of society. Noting that these initiatives witnessed a wide participation of young people in various emirates, and thousands of young people benefited from them. It also witnessed the participation of a large number of institutions and stakeholders in the country.

The initiatives that were presented varied in various fields, reflecting the elements of the youth sector strategy in the country and the goals of the youth councils. At the forefront was work to support youth employment efforts and qualify them to enter the labor market after completing their studies by developing their personal and specialized skills. These initiatives also included improving the quality of life and mental health of young people by encouraging their hobbies and involving them in community activities, as well as caring for people of determination and integrating them into society. Many of these initiatives and projects were characterized by sustainability, such as the Albanian youth initiative launched by the Dubai Youth Council, which during the past two years presented 12 initiatives and 20 projects, and the number of young people benefiting from 14 thousand and 55 entities, according to what the members of the Council’s work team explained in their presentation.

The meeting witnessed honoring the members of the local councils (the fifth session 2020-2023) for their efforts aimed at implementing activities that are in line with the national agendas to support youth, and the members of the local councils for the sixth session 2023-2025 were introduced throughout the UAE.
