The Importance of Work-Life Balance: Lessons from Bill Gates and Warren Buffett

Jakarta

Bill Gates known to work very hard when young and raise Microsoft. As CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates has a busy schedule, once he even sent a request to employees at 02.00 in the morning.

It wasn’t until he looked at Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett’s personal daily schedule that Gates learned to tone down his hard work and that of his employees.

“Every minute is jammed and I think that’s the only way you can do something. I remember Warren showing him his calendar, he had days that had nothing scheduled,” he said, quoted from CNBC.

Buffett’s sparse schedule taught Gates an important lesson. “You control your time. It is not representative of your seriousness if you fill every minute of your schedule,” he said.

“Basically I can buy whatever I want, but I can’t buy time,” added Buffett, who was interviewed with the Microsoft founder in 2017.

Buffett’s method, which boils down to working smarter, not harder, is actually backed by science. Workers’ proficiency plummeted when they worked more than 50 hours per week, according to a 2014 Stanford University study.

According to the study, people who work up to 70 hours a week get the same amount of work as those who stare at a laptop for 55 hours.

Gates isn’t the only CEO to learn that lesson the hard way. For example, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who previously said he regularly works all night for work, now sleeps at least six hours per night.

“I’ve been trying to sleep less, but even though I’m awake longer, I get less done. And brain pain levels get worse if I get less than six hours of sleep per night,” Elon said.

It took Gates himself years to find a healthy work-life balance. “When I was your age, I didn’t believe in holidays. I didn’t believe in weekends. I also didn’t believe the people I worked with had to,” Gates said in a speech to students.

“Don’t wait while I’m learning this lesson. Take time to nurture your relationships, to celebrate successes, and to recover. Rest when you need it. Calm those around you when they need it too,” she says.
