The mamma mia’s and let’s a go’s that we’ve known for years will soon sound a bit different. They are then spoken with a different voice. It is not yet clear who will be the new voice of Mario.
‘Important for the viewer’
Christa Lips knows better than anyone what the importance of a good permanent voice actor is. Among other things, she played the voice of Ash Ketchum from Pokémon for 25 seasons. That ends now, because Ash disappears from the series. “A voice is important for the viewers, because it is a familiar sound and as a viewer you want to hear that with a character.”
Lips knows from her own experience that she stopped watching some programs when the main role was played by a different voice. “But you eventually get used to it.” Although Pokémon did not go without a hitch when a few voice leads were replaced. “The public then rioted.”
Prevent
Changing voices is therefore especially something you want to avoid, says Stephan Holwerda, who is also a voice actor. “You can fool small children, but when they get older they realize more quickly that a voice is not the same.”
According to him, you sail a course with a certain choice for a voice, but choosing a different voice is sometimes unavoidable. “It happens that someone emigrates or goes on vacation, so you look for a voice that is similar.”
Spongebob
But that is not always easy, says Holwerda. “Great voices take a lot of work to replace. I felt screwed as a kid when a new voice came along for Spongebob,” he says. “The Dutch Spongebob is simply the Spongebob for me.”
