Hong Kong, June 23, 2023 – A recent study conducted by researchers has found that individuals who are deficient in vitamin D have a higher risk of being infected with the new coronavirus. Vitamin D, a fat-soluble nutrient, plays a crucial role in maintaining bone and dental health, preventing rickets in infants, and osteoporosis in the elderly. Additionally, studies have shown that vitamin D may help reduce the risk of infection or inflammation.
The main source of vitamin D in the human body is synthesized from the skin through sunlight, earning it the nickname “Sunshine vitamin.” The Department of Health recommends that individuals expose their face, arms, and hands to sunlight for 5 to 15 minutes two to three times a week during the summer to maintain high levels of vitamin D.
While sunlight is the primary source of vitamin D, there are also certain foods that contain natural vitamin D. These include oily fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, rainbow trout, or cod liver oil. Other sources include liver, egg yolk, mushrooms irradiated by sunlight or UV, and fortified foods such as milk, cheese, soy milk, fruit juice, or breakfast cereals.
However, certain groups of people are more likely to be deficient in vitamin D. Individuals with darker skin, those who spend extended periods indoors, or frequently cover their face and body with clothes are at a higher risk. Premature babies, infants who are exclusively breastfed and have limited exposure to sunlight, and patients with liver or kidney disease should also pay attention to their vitamin D intake.
It is important to note that excessive intake of vitamin D over a long period of time can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood, which can weaken bones, increase the risk of kidney stones, or affect heart health. Therefore, it is recommended to consult a doctor and undergo an evaluation before considering vitamin D supplements.
