The Importance of Vitamin D and Potassium for Children

Parents must ensure the intake of vitamin D and potassium in children.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Nutritionist Emilia Achmadi said that most children stop consuming milk at the age of two and the percentage of calcium adequacy in children decreases drastically after the age of two. Vitamin D and potassium intake are also low in children aged 2-11 years, and both of these ingredients are available in quality yogurt.

“Yogurt also contains protein and calcium which are important for bone health, especially the bones of children who grow rapidly,” Emilia said in an official broadcast, Sunday (4/4).

He said, now maybe many parents are worried about the sugar content in dairy products such as yogurt. However, according to Azais-Braesco V et al’s 2017 Nutrition Journal, yogurt contains only 1-8 percent natural sugars and 4-9 percent added sugars, making it safe for children to consume.

“The best thing about yogurt is that by eating yogurt, children can enjoy a delicious snack and not cross their daily calorie limit. In addition, yogurt also contains a myriad of unrivaled nutrients that support children’s growth,” said Emilia.

He added that parents can be creative in making yogurt a child’s favorite snack so that yogurt can be a multipurpose dish. He explained that yogurt contains various benefits for children’s health, ranging from probiotics, calcium and dietary fiber.

Probiotics are good bacteria for gut health that can help improve digestion and remove bad bacteria from the child’s body. While calcium is good for children’s bones and teeth, yogurt made from milk also contains calcium.

Yogurt also contains dietary fiber which is beneficial for the body, including normalizing bowel movements, supporting intestinal health, lowering cholesterol and helping to achieve ideal body weight.
