The Importance of Vaccines in Preventing Dangerous Diseases: Insights from Dr. Andrew Andyputra, Sp.A

Bogordaily.netDoctor Pediatrician at Murni Teguh Ciledug Hospital, Dr. Andrew Andyputra, Sp.A, said that vaccines have been proven to be effective in preventing dangerous diseases.

This was conveyed by Dr. Andrew in a webinar entitled “Preparation for BIAS in 2023”.

The webinar itself was organized by the Larangan Utara Health Center together with the Murni Teguh Ciledug Hospital.

BIAS itself is an extension of School Child Immunization Month. This program is a government program that is held once a year in August and November.

This activity is a series of vaccination activities targeting elementary school children.

In this webinar, Dr. Andrew served as a resource person who educated the participants regarding BIAS.

As an opening, Dr. Andrew explained the reasons why immunization is important.

“Immunization is one of the most “cost effective” prevention. For example, in 2010-2018 the measles vaccine could prevent 23 million child deaths,” said Dr. Andrew.

He also mentioned that around 20 diseases could be prevented by immunization, including: rubella, hepatitis A, COVID 19, tetanus, influenza, and so on.

Immunization itself has two basic goals, namely protecting yourself and also protecting others.

“With a vaccine, a person can form herd immunity. The purpose of herd immunity is that the person can become a barrier or barrier, so that other people cannot catch the virus. If there is no herd immunity, then a group will very quickly contract the disease, explained Dr. Andrew.

He also explained that the vaccine itself had gone through the stages of clinical trials so that its use was ensured to be safe.

Doctor Andrew also encouraged parents not to hesitate to involve their children in the BIAS program.

He explained that a vaccine given to a child when he was under five will begin to lower his immunity so that a child needs a booster dose.

School children also have the risk of becoming a source of infection for the elderly.

He also outlined the various objectives of the BIAS program. For class 1 or age 7 years get the Rubella vaccine in August and the DT vaccine in November 1 time each.

Then for grade 2 or age 8 years get the Td vaccine in November 1 time.

Meanwhile, grade 5 or 11 year olds receive the HPV vaccine (dose 1) in August and the Td vaccine in November 1 time each.

The last one is grade 6 or 12 years of age getting the HPV vaccine (dose 2) in August 1 time. ***
