The Importance of Vaccination Reinforcement: COVID Deaths and the Urgency to Update Vaccination

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1,900 people worldwide died from COVID last month. And most of these deaths occur due to lack of vaccination or vaccination reinforcement. In Argentina, so far this year, 419 people have already died for the same reason and there were 88,870 confirmed cases until September 23, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The problem has almost disappeared from the media agenda and that is why many have the false belief that COVID is an issue that has been overcome. However, it kills people every day.

Since March 2020, 130,696 people have died in Argentina from COVID and 90 percent of them had not been vaccinated, or had not applied the boosters in the corresponding time (they allowed more than six months to pass since the previous dose). According to the Ministry of Health, from July to mid-September, the majority of deaths were in people who had the last dose of the vaccine given more than a year before becoming ill. 77 percent of COVID deaths this year were in the 65 and older age range. 76 percent had comorbidities or risk factors.

How often do I get vaccinated?

People over 50 years of age or of any age but with risk factors should be vaccinated every six months. The rest, once a year.

The Ministry of Health calls on the community to go to public vaccination centers to update their vaccination, because there are 10,467,954 people over 50 years of age who should have received a booster dose in the last 6 months and have not done so.

In January and February of this year in Argentina, infections dropped to 30 deaths per week. And from March to July, there were four deaths per week. From July onwards the curve began to rise with 11 deaths per week, partly due to a more contagious subvariant of Omicron and the lack of booster doses.
