The vice-president of the Romanian Society of Epidemiology, Dr. Emilian Popovici, stated that there is a decrease in vaccination coverage and anti-polio vaccination and recalled that, in 2021, there were cases of poliomyelitis which determined an extraordinary vaccination campaign, and now things are under control, informs News.ro.
Dr. Emilian Popovici was asked on Monday, on Medika TV, if we could risk dealing with very serious diseases that were eradicated in the past through vaccination, precisely because the degree of vaccination in Romania, for various diseases, has decreased a lot .
“Vaccination coverage has decreased for all these vaccines, none of which are mandatory, to be clear. There are the vaccines from the National Program of Immunizations, but see if we take on another serious and undesirable problem, let’s say, poliomyelitis. And there is a decrease in vaccination coverage for anti-polio vaccination. In 2021 it was the cases in Ukraine, which led to that extraordinary vaccination campaign, now things are somehow under control. But let’s think about one more thing. In Ukraine there is a state of war, or it is very clear that war is the extreme manifestation of the economic-social factor, which determines the form of manifestation of the epidemiological process”, stated Dr. Emilian Popovici.
He stated that epidemics can occur at any time in war zones.
“To speak more clearly, it can cause epidemics to appear at any moment. So while you are at war, you have no control over a number of levels of human activity. And this can lead to all kinds of manifestations, including infectious diseases. We must also take this aspect into account, because it is at the border of our country”, explained the vice-president of the Romanian Society of Epidemiology,
