SEVILLA, 24 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Andalusian Association of Community Nursing (Asanec) has stressed this Monday on “the importance” of getting vaccinated against flu and Covid due to “the high rates of morbidity and mortality that contracting these infections entails for certain sectors of the population”, both “in cases of co-infection of both” and due to a “general decline” of immunity against the pandemic virus.
In this sense, he recalled that “one of the reasons for the decrease in the population’s immunity against the coronavirus is due to the fact that the majority of people received their last vaccination dose more than nine months ago.” Therefore, they have warned of “the importance of avoiding contracting both the flu and Covid in cases of people at greater risk of developing complications and who, in turn, can transmit them to more vulnerable people.”
In this way, Asanec has made a call to “join the vaccination campaign against flu and Covid-19 in Andalusia”, remembering that vaccination for people over 60 years of age in Andalusia, security forces and bodies, penitentiary institutions and other professional groups such as veterinarians, farm workers or ranchers, starts next October 30.
Andalusian nurses have recalled the “key dates” of the vaccination calendar in Andalusia 2023-2024, which began on October 9, prioritizing cases from residences, people over 85 years of age, health center staff and children between six and 59 months who attend other vaccines. This group was followed on October 16 by the category of those over 70 years of age, children between six and 59 months, adults and children with risk pathologies, highly dependent people, in the company of their caregivers, and pregnant women.
The next dates on the calendar mark next October 30, the day on which those over 60 years of age, security forces and penitentiary institutions, and veterinarians and livestock farmers will be vaccinated. Subsequently, starting in December, both those over 60 years of age and people at risk will be able to get vaccinated.
On the other hand, Asanec has considered “crucial” the co-administration of the pneumococcus vaccine in the same vaccination event as the flu and coronavirus, “mainly aimed at people between 60 and 72 years old and those who belong to groups of high or moderate risk of invasive pneumococcal disease.
In cases where it is necessary to add other vaccines, the Andalusian association has stated that, if the need to add another of them is indicated, the three vaccines can coexist in the same act. Likewise, they have recalled that, “when vaccines are administered to the same extremity, a space of 2.5 centimeters must be respected between their inoculations”, while, in the case of the Covid-19 vaccine, they have recommended “administering it in the non-dominant limb and as the only one on that limb”
For this campaign, the Junta de Andalucía has acquired 7.5 percent more doses against flu than in 2022, which represents a total of 2.2 million. This increase is mainly due to one of the most notable novelties of this campaign: the lowering of the starting age of flu vaccination in adults, who will now begin to be vaccinated systematically from the age of 60, just like vaccination against covid.
Asanec is the Andalusian Community Nursing Association made up of nurses from all over Andalusia who, without profit, work for and for the development of the profession.
Asanec, as a scientific society, pursues the improvement of healthcare quality at the community level from the defense of public health, influencing and dialoguing with the Administrations.
Among its purposes is to provide training and research in nursing practice to offer quality care to the community, as well as to collaborate with other scientific societies and associations for the better development of the profession.
