“Washing your clothes with water alone may help to remove dirt on the surface of the clothes, but it is not enough to clean bacteria, odors and stains, so I don’t recommend it (washing clothes without detergent),” said Textile Expert, Co-Founder of dna Steamery CEO, Frej Lewenhaupt, quoted from Homes & Gardens, Saturday (7/10/2023).
“If your clothes have stains, you can rub the stains with detergent and wash your clothes by hand or put them in the washing machine,” he continued.
On the other hand, the Founder of Meliora Cleaning Products, Kate Jakubas, revealed the invisible benefits of using detergent when washing clothes, namely removing invisible dirt and existing bacteria.
“Prevalence, and troublesome types of dirt (such as germs, dead skin cells mixed with sweat and oil from the skin) are not the type that can be removed with water, washing with detergent is best. I would only recommend washing with water if you are sure of the type dirt that can be removed with just water,” he explained.
Meanwhile, CEO of New York City laundry service IHatelroning, Matt Connelly, said the main advantage of washing clothes with detergent is its ability to remove stains.
“The chemicals in detergent interact with water to separate stains from your clothes. Water itself cannot just remove stains on clothes. Detergent can also remove odors from clothes and give them a fresh fragrance,” he said.
Connelly suggests, if you don’t want to make your own detergent but want to reduce the chemicals used, washing with natural detergent could be an option.
“Detergents with natural ingredients do not contain the strong chemicals found in commercial detergents and are an option for people who have sensitive skin or allergies. This type of detergent is made using natural ingredients and does not contain parabens, dyes or bleach,” he explained.
