When asked if the President of Lithuania could veto the decision of the NATO summits, which is unacceptable to the country, his advisor replied that it is important to show unity in the Alliance, not an exclusive position.
“Standing in a position to veto may sound impressive, but such vetoes are very poorly received in the Alliance, since everyone seeks consensus and everyone seeks unity, so showing unity is also very important,” A. Skaisgirytė told LRT radio on Tuesday.
“Now all the forces are thrown to get a result that is maximally good for both Ukraine and the entire Alliance,” she added.
According to the president’s adviser, Lithuania is one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, but this requires the approval of all members of the organization.
“Lithuania’s position is very clear – we are probably one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, countries like us have the entire region. However, in order for a decision to be made at the level of NATO, a decision of 31 countries is needed, and negotiations are currently underway,” said A.Skaisgirytė.
The NATO summit will be held in Vilnius on July 11-12, Ukraine is seeking to receive an invitation to become a member of the Alliance.
