The Importance of Unified Infrastructure Development in Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece for Economic Growth

“The more Bulgaria, Romania and Greece unite for a single developed infrastructure, the faster the well-being of the people in each of these countries will grow. If you have different energy sources, you become politically and economically independent.

For example, Bulgaria eliminated its dependence on Russian gas from 95% to 0%. When Russia is decentralized, the Balkans grow,” PP co-chair Kiril Petkov said during a discussion in Davos, Switzerland, the party’s press center reported.

The former prime minister also emphasized the delayed construction of the gas connection between Bulgaria and Greece and of bridges on our border with Romania due to economic and political dependencies. Petkov is categorical that: “Infrastructure development can allow the Balkans to achieve the highest GDP growth per zone in Europe”.

Petkov was part of a discussion on the topic: “Rethinking ports as hubs: the strategic importance of Greece, the Balkans and Europe”, at the Greek House Davos conference, part of the World Economic Forum. The Minister of Finance of Asen Vassilev also took part in the panel.

“Bulgaria is a large special economic zone. With its flat tax of 10%, Bulgaria is a great exception in Europe. Our country has no problem with the growth of the economy and the collection of taxes, but this is hindered by the infrastructure”, stressed Asen Vassilev during of the discussion. He noted that Bulgaria is currently unable to make maximum use of its economic potential due to the lack of infrastructure. – “Analysis shows that if the infrastructure problems are eliminated, as well as full Schengen is achieved, we will increase our GDP by 3% to 5%.”

The Minister of Finance presented detailed data on the busy traffic in the Balkans, despite the lack of well-developed infrastructure, and emphasized the need for investments in this direction – “The Bulgarian-Turkish border is the second with the largest flow after the one between the USA and Mexico. 4,000 trucks pass through it every day. Traffic has grown by 20% to 40% in recent years.”
