The Importance of the U-17 World Cup According to FIFA’s Technical Study Group

Bola.net – Even though only age group teams compete, the importance of the U-17 World Cup cannot be underestimated. FIFA’s Technical Study Group (TSG) considers that this tournament is very important for the development of young players.

One member of the FIFA TSG, Pape Thiaw, said that the U-17 World Cup is a means for players to mature and reach the top level.

“This tournament familiarizes young players with competing. They can experience the atmosphere of a big tournament and gain experience against various teams as part of their development, and allows them to grow faster,” said Thiaw, in a FIFA release obtained Bola.net.

“At the U-17 level, the players are prepared. We talk about developing the game of football and trying to train various things. Through the FIFA U-17 World Cup, we add a competitive side to that development, so that they can show their talents even though they are still young, ” he continued.

The 2023 U-17 World Cup itself has just finished. Germany successfully won the title after defeating France in the top match of the tournament. In the match which was held at Manahan Stadium Solo, Saturday (02/12), they won on penalties, after drawing 2-2 in normal time.

This match was watched live by TSG FIFA. Apart from Thiaw, the team also includes former Swiss national team player, Pascal Zuberbühler, head coach of the Wales women’s senior national football team, Gemma Grainger, and former Paraguayan national team player, Julio Gonzalez.

TSG itself is tasked with identifying and analyzing the technical, tactical and physical trends of the players, naming the Player of the Match in each match, and selecting the winner of the Golden Ball award.

Give Young Players a Challenge

The U-17 World Cup is also considered to provide young players with challenges as a means of maturing them. This tournament takes these players out of their comfort zone and makes them experience things that were previously foreign to them such as travel, accommodation, culture, different time zones and opposing crowds.

These things are all part of the daily life of a senior international player, and by experiencing these things from a young age, players can develop quickly.

“In terms of growth and development of football players, this tournament is very important,” said Julio Gonzalez.

“These kids are U-17 players. Most of them have never even been abroad to play football before, so playing international matches against other national teams provides a unique and valuable experience for these players. This cannot be compared with any other tournament,” he added.

Will Become an Annual Tournament

The tournament is so important to young players that FIFA will change the U-17 World Cup tournament. No longer biennial, this tournament will be held every year.

“The U-17 level is a potential age for young footballers who are moving up the career ladder. After conducting long studies and consultations, FIFA decided that the FIFA U-17 World Cup should be held every year,” said Zuberbühler.

This plan was welcomed positively by Gonzalez. According to him, this will have a positive impact on the players taking part in the tournament.

“The U-17 World Cup held every year can change the development of football completely. This can make a big difference throughout the world, for every child who is developing and growing as a player,” he said.
