It seems to depend on the President who is elected in January next year.

(Taipei = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Cheol-moon = With the official introduction of Taiwan’s first domestically produced defense submarine (IDS), which will strengthen Taiwan’s military capabilities, Taiwan’s President emphasized the need to build follow-up submarines.

According to Taiwanese media, including the China Times, on the 29th, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen made this statement while attending the naming and launching ceremony of the domestically produced IDS prototype held at the Taiwan International Shipbuilding Corporation (CSBC) Kaohsiung plant the day before.

First, President Tsai explained that the plan to build domestically produced submarines is an important force to protect Taiwan’s coast.

He added, “We have already taken an important step forward,” and added, “I hope that in the future, the ruling and opposition parties will continue to support the construction of follow-up submarines by attaching importance to national security, regardless of political party.”

In addition, he said he hopes Taiwan will have global competitiveness in self-defense capabilities and related industrial development.

In relation to this, Hwang Soo-gwang, former Chief of Staff of the Ministry of National Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who is an advisory member of the National Security Council (NSC), did not say anything about the possibility of a special budget being invested in the subsequent IDS construction, saying that the deployment of the prototype IDS ship in 2025 is the top priority. He stated that.

He added that after completing the port mooring test of the IDS prototype ship in April next year, sea testing will begin in May.

Previously, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense mentioned in February that budget allocation has not yet been made in relation to the project to build seven follow-up IDS submarines, as a decision on mass production can only be made after completing operational test evaluations of the prototype ships.

Accordingly, Taiwanese media believes that the decision to mass produce and budget for the follow-up IDS will depend on the next president elected in the election held in January next year.

Taiwan’s IDS has a diving depth of 350~420m and is equipped with a combat system and torpedoes manufactured by Lockheed Martin of the United States.

Su Ziyun, a researcher at Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense think tank Institute for Defense Security Research (INDSR), said that in case of emergency, if domestically produced submarines are deployed into the Bashi Strait and Miyako Strait (the sea area between Japan’s Okinawa Island and Miyako Island, northeast of Taiwan), which are strategic gateways between Taiwan and the Philippines, a Chinese aircraft carrier will be deployed. It is expected that it will be possible to block the entry and blockade of the Type 075 amphibious assault ships into the eastern waters of Taiwan.
