The free vaccination campaign for fourth-grade girls represents a real chance to prevent cervical cancer, a disease whose mortality ranks us first in Europe. Unfortunately, the politicization and faulty information regarding the benefits of this campaign, which was intended to be honest and beneficial for health, led to the refusal of vaccination by many, far too many parents, in ignorance.
With this dangerous precedent, there is a risk of refusal for other vaccinations, a situation that creates all the conditions for the appearance of long-forgotten diseases, such as poliomyelitis, also caused by a virus.
For the prevention of cervical cancer, there are the following possibilities: primary prophylaxis of HPV infection through vaccination, correct information regarding the risk of the disease, continuous sexual education and periodic medical check-ups for the early detection of precancerous lesions (Pap test and HPV test).
The anti-HPV vaccine protects the body against HPV infection by stimulating the production of antibodies. There are currently 2 types of vaccine, both ensuring protection against oncogenic strains of the HPV virus, and one of them also offers protection against 2 strains responsible for the appearance of papillomas.
Vaccines have been used in our country for several years, but in a limited number of girls, due to the high price and lack of information. It should be noted that no notable post-vaccination incidents were reported.
CAREFUL!
Vaccines have saved the most lives in human history, being the treatments with the fewest side effects, compared to a good portion of the drugs commonly used by most of the population.
Of the more than 30 million doses of anti-HPV vaccine administered worldwide, no major adverse reaction has been recorded, the rumors appearing in this regard being mere speculation. Compared to the old vaccines which, although made with modest technologies, still saved millions of lives, today the technology in this field has evolved significantly, so that the risks generated by the use of new vaccines are now minor.
REMEMBER!
These vaccines are widely used in the US and many European countries. The few deaths suspected to be related to the anti-HPV vaccination in the US were thoroughly investigated by medical examiners, the conclusion being that it was not the vaccination that caused the deaths, but certain pre-existing conditions.
Since 2006, the authorized bodies in the USA have made the decision to approve and recommend the use of anti-HPV vaccines. The same situation exists in Europe, where many countries have started anti-HPV vaccination through national programs, such as the program launched in Romania.
