Many car enthusiasts often neglect to check the cooling system expansion tank expansion cap, not realizing its importance. However, this seemingly insignificant part can cause serious problems that can lead to costly engine damage. The owner of a car service center, in an interview with the njcar.ru portal, confirmed that ignoring the condition of the cover could cause critical problems.

The expansion tank cap is not just a plastic or metal plug. It plays a central role in the car’s cooling system, controlling two important valves that ensure stable engine operation. The first of these, the safety valve, is activated when the engine starts, helping the engine warm up to the optimal temperature.

The second valve, the intake valve, regulates the air flow, compensating for the decrease in antifreeze volume as the engine cools.

If one of the valves fails, this can lead to antifreeze leaks, air locks and, as a result, overheating of the engine, which can damage the internal combustion engine and the head gasket. cylinder burn out.

To identify problems with the cover, you have to wait until the engine cools down and check the pipes under the hood. If they are condensed, this could indicate a faulty intake valve, so it is better to replace the cover. Checking the safety valve requires starting the engine, warming it up and carefully opening the cap of the expansion tank.

If a hissing sound is heard, the valve is working correctly, but if there is no vibration, the cap should also be replaced to prevent the engine from overheating.
