Mijntelco The increasing digitization and growth of data traffic are not free of CO2 emissions. For telecom operators, but also for consumers, the theme of sustainability is gaining in importance year after year. With which provider is your ecological footprint the smallest? And can you opt for sustainable telecom? Mijntelco.be figured it out.

CO2 neutrality
The fact that sustainability is an important theme for Belgian telecom operators was shown at the end of last year by the results of a study by telecom regulator BIPT. This showed that in the period 2018-2021, energy consumption at the operators decreased by 11 percent. In addition, they reduced their CO2 emissions by 38 percent.
By purchasing emission rights, every operator on the Belgian telecom market is in principle already CO2 neutral. Nevertheless, many players are taking extra steps, for example in the field of reuse and recycling of set-top boxes and modems.

The report of Proximus, Telenet and Orange
The study shows that Proximus is the largest energy consumer, although the operator managed to reduce its energy consumption by 15 percent between 2018 and 2021, to 736 gigawatt hours (GWh). Telenet is second in a row with a consumption of 218 GWh, followed by Orange with 123 GWh. The operators obtain 80 percent of their energy from renewable sources, but they produce only 2 percent of their energy consumption themselves. This puts them around the European average.
Proximus is also a leader in terms of CO2 emissions. The company has managed to reduce its emissions to 27 kilotonnes since 2018. Telenet and Orange also succeeded in reducing their emissions. It should be noted that you have to put the figures in perspective, since Proximus has most of its activities in our country, especially in the business segment.
Sustainable initiatives
Many consumers today attach importance to sustainability; think of awareness around commuting or clothing. Telecom often dangles at the bottom of the list, mainly because customers are not aware of the sustainable initiatives or alternatives on the market.
Nevertheless, the operators provide some options to reduce your ecological footprint. In the MyProximus app, for example, Proximus offers MyFootprint: a tool that allows you to calculate your ecological footprint and gain insight into how you can reduce it. With its Re program, Orange helps customers to think about the sustainability of their smartphones, for example when purchasing their next device. Proximus is also actively committed to the recycling of smartphones and other devices.
New – green – provider
For consumers who want to go a step further in the field of sustainable telecom, there are also so-called green operators. An example of this is UNDO, a Belgian virtual mobile provider that came on the market last month. According to the brand new operator, every consumer annually emits an average of 60 kilograms of CO2 by using their smartphone every day. One of the goals of this provider is therefore to reduce the human impact on the climate and CO2 emissions.
UNDO tries to achieve this by planting a tree in Congo for every new subscriber, thus contributing to the reforestation of the planet. Customers also have the option to add extra add-ons to their subscription, such as financial support for school renovation projects or medical assistance.
Just like Proximus, UNDO also assists its customers via an app that teaches them to be more aware of their mobile phone use, including a calculation tool. This not only provides insight into your data usage, but also the associated CO2 emissions.
