The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the strengthening of EU borders and their management are among the main elements in the fight against illegal migration, citing the projects in Bulgaria and Romania as an example, the press service of the EC reported.
“I want to emphasize the strengthening of external borders and the improvement of the effectiveness of border management, of border procedures. Here we have two pilot projects that have been set up in Bulgaria and Romania with the support of the Commission, but also of Frontex, Europol and the Asylum Agency. They are already underway. And I hope that these pilot projects will serve as best practice for other external borders of the European Union.”
The leaders of the member states did not adopt a common conclusion on migration issues after the end of the two-day summit in Brussels, as the proposals were supported by Hungary and Poland.
On the other hand, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, still emphasized:
“The reality is that there are 25 countries that have mobilized to support the process – the triggering of the migration pact as it was democratically negotiated and two countries that have declared their disapproval. The two reasons for this are their fundamental disagreement with the pact and with the process for decision-making, more precisely by qualified majority”.
