The Importance of Sleep: Insights from Bill Gates and Andrew Huberman

If you are like me and follow his podcasts Andrew Huberman, you probably already know the importance of sleep for the human being. Well, not all of us know it and especially when we are young we make mistakes in this regard. Not just me or you, but also Bill Gateswho greatly underestimated sleep and… kind of made fun of it in his youth

Bill Gates had a period in his youth when he considered sleep “not at all necessary” and even competed with his colleagues to see who sleeps the least. The practice has also extended into adulthood, at the ages of 30+ and 40+. These revelations appeared on the “Unconfuse Me With Bill Gates” podcast, which had Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen as guests.

Gates, 67 years old, said that in his entourage there were people who boasted of 6 hours of sleep, and others of only 5. Gates had come to brag that he doesn’t sleep at all. At that time, he considered sleep as “laziness” and “useless”. He would change his mindset after his father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, making him look more closely at brain health.

Apparently studies show that the number one factor in Alzheimer’s studies is quality sleep as a preventative measure. It is actually a vital factor in any form of dementia, and doctors are studying the effect of lack of sleep on this condition. It appears that adults aged 65 who get less than 5 hours of rest a night are twice as likely to develop dementia or die in the next 5 years as those who get 6 to 8 hours of sleep, according to a Harvard study from 2021. More than 2,800 people of that age participated in the study.

And sleep is vital for teenagers: those who sleep between 8 and 10 hours a night have optimal intellectual growth, excellent mental health and good memory. For those between 20 and 64 years of age, between 7 and 9 hours of sleep represents perfection. Now Gates sleeps at least 7 hours a night and checks his “sleep score” on portable.

Now I leave you to answer in the comments about your sleeping habits. How much sleep do you get per night and how rested do you feel afterwards?
