The Importance of Regularly Washing and Storing Towels to Prevent Disease Transmission and Skin Problems

WARTASULUH.COM- Unlike clothes or sheets, the cleanliness of towels often goes unnoticed. Not to mention, some people forget to wash and replace them.

However, storing towels incorrectly, such as wet ones, can trigger the appearance of bacteria. Towels that are damp, wet and not completely dry will be a good medium for the growth of fungi or parasites.

Home cleaning expert and infectious disease prevention specialist, Dr. Sally Bloomfield, said that towels are items that must be kept clean. Ideally, towels should be washed once a week even if they look clean.

“Even though it looks clean, in one towel there are millions of germs that can transmit diseases and cause serious health problems for humans,” said Bloomfield, quoted by the BBC, Wednesday (13/9/2023).

“If you don’t wash your towels regularly, the number of organisms (germs) on the towels will increasingly accumulate. In fact, this collection of germs will be difficult to remove when washing,” he continued.

Bloomfield said the risk of disease caused by germs will be higher if one towel is used at the same time or washed in the same place.

“Towels that have a lot of germs can spread to other people if they are used together. Apart from that, infection can also spread if you wash items, including towels, in the same laundry as other people’s items,” explained Bloomfield.

Meanwhile, consultant dermatologist, Dr. Cristina Psomadakis, said that everyone should make a special schedule for washing towels. Because poor towel conditions can trigger various skin problems.

“If you often experience acne on your facial or body skin, immediately wash your towels regularly,” stressed Dr. Psomadakis.

“If not [mencuci handuk secara rutin]this problem (acne or other skin problems) will continue to happen to you,” stressed Psomadakis.

Apart from regularly washing towels at least once a week, Dr. Psomadakis recommends that each individual use different towels for each need, such as distinguishing between body towels and face towels.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bloomfield advises everyone to use low temperature water when washing towels.
