REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Internal medicine specialist from the Association of Indonesian Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) Dr. M Ikhsan Mokoagow recommends the public to regularly check blood sugar levels to recognize and prevent prediabetes. Person pradiabetes is the one sugar level his blood had not yet reached the threshold diabetes but already above normal.
“People whose blood sugar levels have not yet reached the diabetes threshold, but are already above the normal threshold, are said to have prediabetes,” said Ikhsan in an online interview attended from Jakarta, Monday (13/11/2023).
A person who does not get calorie intake for eight hours normally has levels blood sugar below 100. If their blood sugar level is equal to or above 126, it means they have diabetes. So, people who have blood sugar levels equal to or more than 100, but below 126, are said to have prediabetes.
However, the subspecialist in metabolic endocrinology and diabetes said that in general people who have prediabetes have no symptoms so they are often unaware of the condition.
He also advised people who are at risk of developing diabetes, such as children with diabetic parents or people who are overweight, to undergo screening and check their blood sugar levels regularly every six months to once a year.
Apart from being able to control blood sugar levels from an early age, proper screening is also important to prevent complications that may arise due to diabetes.
“Apart from that, they also have to follow a good diet and do enough exercise so they can maintain an ideal body weight,” said Ikhsan.
Quoting the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Ikhsan stated that Indonesia’s ranking with the highest number of diabetes sufferers in the world has increased from 7th in 2019 to 5th in 2021.
“This may be because we are now screening better, so more people are being diagnosed with diabetes earlier. “Nevertheless, this shows that diabetes is a real problem,” he said.
Therefore, the commemoration of World Diabetes Day 2023, which falls on November 14 every year, carries the theme “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response” to remind the public of the importance of screening, especially for people who have prediabetes or have hereditary factors for diabetes.
