DEWATA NEWS – Midwife Lusinta Agustina said recognizing danger signs in a child’s growth and development is important for every mother. There are several crucial things that must be emphasized in recognizing signs of danger in the growth and development of babies and children.
This lecturer in the midwifery department at the Surakarta Health Polytechnic said that a mother must know about red flags or danger signs which are dangerous conditions at the stage of a child’s growth and development.
“There is a delay in one aspect of development, for example, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, speech language development, social personality. “There is a delay in one aspect, or two aspects, all aspects or there is a setback in development,” said Lusinta, Thursday, February 15 2024.
The owner of Edelweiss Mom And Baby Spa said that growth and development are two different things. There is growth or you could say growth and development which is called development.
According to him, the aspect of growth is increasing physical size, increasing the number of cells from small to large.
“When talking about the development of a more complex body structure. “For your own growth, you need to monitor your weight, height and head circumference, these three things must be monitored,” said Lusinta Agustina.
“More complex ones include chest circumference, arm circumference. “In the developmental aspect, functions increase to become more complex, as measured by fine motor skills, gross motor skills, personal social and spoken language,” he added.
According to Lusinta, gross motor skills that use large muscles influence the development of the ability to crawl, sit, stand, walk and run. Meanwhile, fine motor skills carry out observation activities that use small muscles, for example playing, arranging cubes, arranging blocks, writing, drawing, doodling.
Then for personal social, it is a person’s independent ability, such as wearing buttons, wearing shoelaces, taking off clothes, changing trousers. Lastly, the development of spoken language is a response to commands or sounds such as mama papa, carrying out commands, when called upon to listen.
“When we talk about growth and development, we don’t just monitor weight and height,” said Lusinta in an interview with Doodle Exclusive Baby Care.
He provides suggestions on how to find out whether a child is experiencing delays or not. First, from the growth aspect, carry out monthly weigh-ins at the posyandu, to check body weight, measure body length and measure head circumference.
At the posyandu or health workers there are notes that are entered into the curve which will be checked whether it is normal or not. Apart from the posyandu, you can also come to a midwife or mom and baby spa.
“Next, carry out developmental screening using the Denver Developmental Screening Test (DDST). Second, using the Developmental Pre-Screening Questionnaire (KPSP), whether the child has any deviations or not. “It must be carried out by health workers who are experts in their field,” he explained.
*Regular Health Monitoring*
According to Sinta, the thing you need to remember is your weight and height which must be monitored every month. The results can be seen from the Health Towards Card (KMS) curve.
“If the child is less than 2 years old, check every 3 months. “Meanwhile, if the child is over 2 years old, check every 6 months for development,” he said.
The midwife, who is also a baby massage practitioner, added that delays in children’s growth and development are influenced by internal factors, namely, growth and development which is influenced from within.
“For example, a sense of certain ethnicities, family genetics, age, gender and other things such as chromosomal abnormalities,” explained Lusinta.
Factors during pregnancy include the nutrition consumed by pregnant women, the position of the baby, exposure to x-ray radiation which is dangerous for the baby’s body and can cause defects, torch infections and rubella infections.
So, what should be done if the child is experiencing delays, Lusinta said, is not to panic. If there is a delay, it is recommended to check first from a developmental aspect and carry out intensive stimulation.
If the development age is not yet capable, it must be optimized at the previous age, then adjusted to the current age.
If the delay is due to malnutrition or stunting, what is done is to provide nutrition such as formula milk which is high in calories.
“Give food that contains lots of animal protein, at least 2 eggs a day. “When they have caught up according to their developmental age, give praise to the child, then provide stimulation for the next age,” he explained.
During a child’s golden period or 5 years of golden age, midwife Lusinta recommends that their growth and development be optimized. When there is a delay of the first 5 years in progressing to the following years it will be difficult to repair.
“If stunting occurs in the first two years and is not treated immediately, it will be quite difficult to get out of stunting,” explained Lusinta.
The danger of developmental delays in children is divided into 2, namely, short-term impacts and long-term impacts.
“In the short term, children usually get sick easily, get weak easily because their immune system is down, often have fevers, often have colds, often cough,” he said.
For long-term impacts, children will experience cognitive impairment, which is a delay in cognitive functions, characterized by difficulty in reading, writing, counting or expressing words. However, this does not mean that children who have bad grades have experienced delays, it could be because their environment or they are lazy about studying.
