Jakarta –
Bacapres Coalition for Change for Unity (KPP) Anies Baswedan said public transportation should not only think about profit. But, also benefits that can be felt by the community.
This was conveyed by Anies in the event ‘Anies Baswedan Talks about Culture: About Now and Later’ at TIM, Central Jakarta, Thursday (24/8/2023). Initially, Anies said that the state has two hands for the bureaucracy and corporations.
“The country has two hands. One bureaucracy, one corporation. Both are for development. One is with the bureaucracy, the other is with the corporation. For what? To feel the benefits for society,” said Anies.
“There are activities that cannot be used with bureaucratic hands. Use corporate hands,” he continued.
Anies then gave an example that the construction of public transportation in Jakarta was not handed over to the Department of Transportation. However, to BUMD PT TransJakarta.
“So that he can have flexibility in interacting with any party, because he as an entity is not required to generate profits, he is required to generate gains, benefits, not profits,” he explained.
Anies said that PT TransJakarta was not designed to make a profit in matters of public transportation. Instead, the goal is for people to use public transportation, thereby reducing air pollution.
“What are the benefits? The benefit is that more people use public transportation than private vehicles,” said the former Governor of DKI Jakarta.
“What are the consequences? Pollution will decrease. Citizen interaction will increase. Fuel subsidies will decrease because people will use vehicles,” he added.
Anies also said that the emphasis should be on benefits, not profit. Because, according to him, if profit is demanded, public transportation will not work.
“So the form is a benefit. Not profit. If you demand profit, it won’t be public transportation,” he said.
