All men who have turned 50 should go to a urologist for a check-up to prevent prostate cancer, the second most common after lung cancer, warns oncologist Laura Sinea, from a private clinic in Sibiu. volunteer at the “Sus Inima” organization, according to Agerpres.
Cancer patients should also seek the help of psychologists
“I want to congratulate the organizers of this event, we really needed a day dedicated to raising awareness of the medical conditions that men around the world can suffer from. (…) Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in men, after lung cancer. Usually, prostate cancer affects older men, it appears at over 65 years of age, very rarely the disease is detected under 40 years of age. Among the risk factors, age, family history, patients who have first- or second-degree relatives with breast, prostate, pancreatic cancer, we know that they are at a higher risk of developing prostate cancer, compared to the general population. Another possible risk factor is obesity”, said on Sunday, the oncologist, Laura Sinea, a volunteer at “Sus Inima”.
Laura Sinea says that “all men over the age of 50 should have a urological consultation and prostate cancer screening, and men who have first or second degree relatives with prostate cancer are advised to start screening at 40-45 years old.”
According to the Sibiian doctor, in the beginning, prostate cancer has no symptoms. Later, frequent urination occurs, even with blood. When metastases appear, the disease has already evolved and then it can also affect the bones.
“We make the diagnosis through an MRI of the prostate and a biopsy”, added doctor Laura Sinea.
In the opinion of the oncologist from “Sus Inima”, the help of psychologists is essential in treating cancer.
“Finding an oncological diagnosis affects both the patients, the patients’ families and the doctor. It affects me too, because the patient’s struggle becomes my struggle too. It is not easy to be one step ahead of the disease, it is not easy to fight together against the disease. As we take care of the body, we must also take care of the mind and soul. And how do we take care? I encourage all patients to seek psychological counseling. It’s very good that in Sibiu they have a lot of options”, remarked Laura Sinea.
Doctor Laura Sinea spoke on Sunday to several dozen men, gathered with classic cars and motorcycles, at the first edition of “The Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive” (Parade of distinguished gentlemen) in Romania, which took place in Sibiu.
Half a million men commit suicide a year, in the world
Organized by Ovidiu Popârţan and Andy Fazekas, the parade aims to prevent male diseases: prostate cancer and mental illnesses.
“Gentleman’s Drive is a charitable event that happens today all over the world, more precisely in 200 cities from 60 countries, Sibiu is the first city in Romania that obtained the hosting for this event. Its purpose is the prevention and treatment of diseases that affect men both physically and mentally, in this case, prostate cancer, which is the second cause of men’s mortality, and suicide. Suicide among men is a very common phenomenon, the figures say that one man dies every minute in the world in the course of a year”, Ovidiu Popârţan drew attention.
He pointed out that, “510,000 men die by suicide globally every year. It’s one every minute.”
Andy Fazekas: “The retro community in Sibiu is growing exponentially”
“It’s a very nice and useful event and it’s the first time we organize something like this in Romania, let’s hope it’s a good start and over the years more and more people will participate. The retro community in Sibiu is growing exponentially and it seems that not only in terms of cars, but also in the soul. (…) Maybe at least on the prevention side, but also on the treatment side, we will reach another level thanks to the participation and donations”, Andy Fazekas pointed out.
The ten drivers who drove classic cars on Sunday, through the city of Sibiu, to the shopping center in the neighboring commune, Şelimbăr, are the ones who drew attention to the fact that they are concerned about the increasing incidence of prostate cancer and the high number of suicides among men .
In addition to the ten drivers from Sibiu, nine others donated sums of money for “The Distinguished Gentleman’s Drive”, the total amount so far is over 800 dollars.
