REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Indonesian Transplant Association Dr Dr Maruhum Bonar Hasiholan Marbun, SpPD-KGH, said that the patient kidney failure Most are not serious and ignore treatment after undergoing a kidney transplant. “The most difficult thing is that patients never respond seriously to post-transplant conditions, almost 60 percent are like that,” he said when met at a kidney health education by Etana Biotechnologies in Jakarta, some time ago.
Maruhum said that patients who ignore it are usually because they feel that their health condition has improved from usual after the transplant, so they do not receive regular treatment. In fact, the patient does the treatment kidney transplant is absolute throughout life. Post-kidney transplant care needs to be carried out optimally, considering that this procedure is quite a heavy operation.
Apart from that, even though kidney transplant patients no longer need to undergo hemodialysis or dialysis for life, regular treatment is needed considering that there are various fatal risks that must be taken into account. These risks include stomach infections, decreased immunity due to immunosuppressant drugs, the possibility of decreased kidney function due to an unhealthy lifestyle, and the worst is the possibility of kidney rejection.
“This means that it is a foreign object, the kidney that was installed was not his kidney, it entered his body. “Well, the body adapts, if the body thinks it is a foreign object and if it is not suppressed with immunosuppressive drugs, rejection will occur,” explained Maruhum.
There are two categories of kidney rejection, namely acute and chronic rejection. Maruhum said that acute kidney rejection can still be treated with medication. However, chronic kidney rejection can cause death.
“If it is chronic, it is usually quite difficult to overcome, not only will you return to dialysis, but you will die,” he added.
A kidney transplant is a procedure for treating chronic kidney failure. The doctor will remove the damaged kidney and replace it with a healthy kidney from a donor. Kidney donations are obtained from donors who are still alive or who have died. Generally, living donors come from family members, this is more recommended because the risk of rejection is smaller.
However, it should be remembered that kidney transplantation is not a treatment where after surgery the patient immediately recovers and is free. This means that life after a kidney transplant requires care or consumption of medications that are important for the survival of the grafted kidney.
“New patients can be said to be in stable condition, generally three months to one year after transplantation,” said Maruhum.
