Because Switzerland has to import electricity in winter, some of which comes from gas-fired power plants, fossil fuels play an important role as an energy source. According to the Federal Office of Energy, natural gas accounted for 12.8 percent of gross energy consumption in Switzerland last year, ranking fourth behind oil, nuclear energy and hydropower.
