The CHR Metz-Thionville is not a university hospital, like that of Nancy, and yet it also welcomes medical interns. Can you say more?
“Indeed, we regularly welcome medical interns, even if we are not a university hospital. It is even very important for us to be able to participate in the training of future doctors. We have around 200 each year on our different sites. At the Maillot hospital in Val de Briey, in November, there will be seven interns: three in obstetrics, two in general medicine and two in geriatrics. Concerning our schools and training institutes, which offer courses in pharmacy technicians, midwives, nurses, caregivers and childcare workers, the CHR reaches the number of 1,500 students, which probably makes it the most important in France. »
Has the caregiver crisis had an impact on the registration of young people in these health sectors?
” Actually no. Thanks to the pandemic, the State granted credits to the Ifsi (Nursing Training Institutes), which made it possible to increase reception capacities by 40% from 2021. This year, the Ifsi de Briey has 51 students in its 1st year. It is then up to us to retain them so that they stay in the region. Here, we don’t have the sun or the sea. So, we perhaps come to our hospitals by chance, but if we decide to stay there, it is no longer a matter of chance. »
What are you working on to improve working conditions?
“The pandemic was an accelerator of the hospital’s difficulties. When I arrived, I said I wanted to “re-enchant” him. This requires putting work organizations back on track. We were preoccupied with production and we lost the meaning of our work. There are currently cross discussions with the teams to find a better balance between work and private life. I hope that we will achieve a result by the end of the year, beginning of next year. But you should know that now when we recruit, we are asked if there is housing nearby, childcare, transport, bicycle parks for soft mobility… Without forgetting “the stone in the shoe”, the administrative and logistical tasks that must be removed from their workload. »
