In order to train a generation of future critics, we must believe and they believe in our need for literary criticism and in the importance of reading, which, although it is for enjoyment, is necessary for more than one goal.
There is no doubt that those who attack criticism are ignorant of its purpose. It is not true that the critic wants to influence the way writers write, as much as he is interested in using literature as a window to understand aspects of our societies and learn about its issues, which calls us to give him appreciation that makes criticism the focus of everyone’s attention.
The most important thing for us to realize is that both are important. We can read a book to enjoy and feel it, and we can read criticism to discover another pleasure that lies in probing the depths of texts and unraveling their ambiguities. Literary criticism facilitates reading smoothly and smoothly and supports the ability to distinguish between good and bad.
Every type of criticism has the ability to answer the questions of readers and seekers of knowledge in different ways. It is not the stick that hits or knocks, but rather the one we rely on and helps some people find their way.
There is criticism that helps us understand a complex text or one written in a very old language, and criticism that defends a work or reveals its flaws so that we do not fall into mistakes that might cost us adopting opinions that are not really valid, or reading works without any hope of purpose, and criticism that provides us with a list of what we should read and enjoy the content. We would not have realized it unless we read about it or someone told us that it is a good work worth reading and new ideas worth exploring. Criticism is a good reading of literature whose goal is to delve deeper into life through the ideas of the authors and the cultural issues raised or thinking about society and what we can stimulate through these readings. Just as academic criticism helps to explore the defects or advantages of a work and provides learners with the opportunity to read and learn what the work is and the justifications for its writing and composition, it is important to train criticism students to practice it while reading and pay attention to taking notes or comments that explain the way they understand the text, and learn to consider the context in which the text was written. Understand what the author wants to say and why they use the language they write in, and support their analysis with evidence to learn to make a stronger argument and convince others of their point of view.
It is necessary to help them develop their voices and encourage them to think critically and express their ideas and opinions about any work they study or topic they read, whether it is within their curricula or in their general readings and away from learning criticism as an independent subject in itself.
Providing learners with feedback about their opinions and providing support and guidance to them as they work on analysis and criticism plays an important role in improving their skills, so that they become more confident in their abilities to analyze and criticize literature in the future, and we have a generation of professional critics.
