If we talk about the use of the Russian language by sectors and positions, then I will say that it is probably not the case in business, that the language will be decisive. It will not be the case that someone will refuse to sign a contract with a partner just because of this, if he does not understand the Latvian language and is Russian-speaking, for example, Belarusian, Kazakh or similar. This opinion was expressed by Pēteris Šmidre, entrepreneur, chairman of the board of the Telecommunications Association, in the TV 24 program “Press Club”.
Therefore, the business environment is also one where the Russian language sounds much more than in any other industry. But Shmidre wants people to also understand such a thing as the fact that everything is a little different in business.
“I’m not talking about doing business with the Russians, but
we speak with Kazakhs, Ukrainians, we speak Russian with Poles and Czechs. These nations still often know the Russian language much better than the English language,” says Shmidre.
But what Latvians lack and, unlike Estonians, what we Lithuanians have is definitely attitude, says Shmidre, noting that his experience shows that, for example, in Estonia, there is a normal answer in business as well: “I don’t understand English and I don’t speak Russian. “
This means that they have a very strong conviction inside that they speak their own language in their land, in their country – this is what Latvians lack, Shmidre believes.
