REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — When indicated that they have a mental health disorder, some people may think that the solution is to immediately consult a psychologist or psychiatrist. However, experts also mentioned the need to carry out laboratory tests.
In a press conference some time ago, it was revealed that laboratory checks are needed because there are underlying health factors that contribute to various symptoms of mental health disorders.
“Role laboratory test is to ensure that the mental health symptoms that arise are not the result of one disease. So, we can eliminate or get rid of this possibility,” said Business & Marketing Director of Prodia, Indriyanti Rafi Sukmawati.
How’s the flow? Indriyanti said that someone who feels they are developing certain mental health conditions will usually consult a psychiatrist, psychologist or doctor. From the results of the consultation, medical professionals often recommend which laboratory tests are needed.
The Prodia team explained that there are dozens of blood tests that can provide supporting information regarding mental health conditions. The series of laboratory tests include prohealthy gut (PHG), HbA1c or blood sugar tests, thyroid tests (TSHs), hsCRP, amino acid profile, omega profile, vitamin D, vitamins B12, B1, B6, folic acid, zinc and selenium Mg , homocysteine, estradiol, and cortisol.
For example, thyroid disease and depression can share similar features, including weakness, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. By doing laboratory tests, it will be known whether the symptoms are related to the thyroid. If not, you can eliminate the root of the problem and continue to receive treatment from a mental health expert.
Likewise with other tests, such as checking vitamin levels. The reason is, vitamin D deficiency has the potential to cause various disturbances in body functions, including mood. If indeed the body is not deficient in vitamins (which is known from laboratory results), medical professionals can continue to treat the patient’s condition related to psychological aspects.
