Jakarta (ANTARA) – Cardiologist and blood vessel specialist Dr. Utojo Lubiantori Sp.JP said that the use of IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS) and Optical Cohorence Tomography (OCT) technology is important for accuracy and accuracy in placing stents in blocked arteries that cause heart disease. “The inside of the arteries can only be seen with two tools, IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS) and Optical Cohorence Tomography (OCT). There you can find out how many sizes are needed to place a stent so that the blood vessels can widen,” he said in a health discussion in Jakarta , Tuesday. The doctor who graduated from the University of Indonesia explained that IVUS technology had actually been around since the 1990s. This technology applies an ultrasound system (USG) or intravascular sound waves to see the inside of blood vessels. The resulting imaging can detect the depth of the blood vessel wall and how many sizes are needed to place the stent.

Meanwhile, OCT is a technology that has been around since the 2000s, which provides more colorful images with infrared. From this observation, you will see a blockage in the blood vessel hole in more detail. IVUS or OCT is used during a catheterization or ballooning procedure called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) which is a non-medical procedure. “IVUS and OCT are PCI actions, not bypasses, non-medical actions to dilate blood vessels. PCI actions have much smaller risks and work in one to two days compared to months of bypass,” said Utojo. Utojo explained the need for stent placement in the heart using IVUS and OCT because catheterization can only detect stent placement in blocked places, but cannot be known if there are blood clots in the blood vessel walls. So that complications cannot be known during the procedure or after the action. Installation of a stent that does not match the size of the blood vessel can cause blood clots which can be fatal and even death.

Stents that don’t fit are more easily clogged again and can be fatal, blood clots occur, heart attacks to death, ” explained the doctor who practices at Mitra Keluarga Kelapa Gading Hospital. Stents are devices used to open blockages in blood vessels that cause heart attacks. This tool is made from Cobalt Chromium (CoCr) or platinum. This material is considered better than stents made of stainless steel because it is thinner but stronger and has better and clearer visibility on x-ray observations.

Stent placement does not cause side effects or allergies, but there is a small risk that you will often encounter blood clots in a stent called stent thrombosis and restenosis. “The most common and can be dangerous is the formation of blood clots in a stent called stent thrombosis. That’s why you have to take blood-thinning drugs for the rest of your life,” said the doctor who is also a heart catheterization subspecialist from a university in the Netherlands. With IVUS and OCT technology, stent placement can be more perfect and minimize narrowing of the arteries that causes heart disease.
