The Importance of Insuring Movable Property: A Focus on Smartphone, TV, and Home Electronics

When thinking about concluding insurance contracts, a large number of people primarily focus on the most expensive assets such as housing, vehicles or their own life, neglecting less valuable assets. However, it is precisely the so-called movable properties that are one of the most frequently damaged and rather expensive items, besides, they very often suffer in seemingly harmless, domestic situations. The insurance joint-stock company “BTA Baltic Insurance Company” (hereinafter – BTA) annually compensates several hundred customers for the repair costs of damaged household goods, and the average amount of one compensation in the last three years was 450 euros.

The most frequently affected household item has become the ever-present smartphone. Users have overcome it in all sorts of ways. The means of communication has fallen out of the hands or pocket, pushed off the table, torn off the ground by hooking the charging cable, users have sat on top of a phone carelessly dropped on the couch or broken the screen while sitting down while the device is in a trouser pocket.

A frequent victim of accidents is a television set that gets damaged while children are playing or cleaning the house. BTA regularly receives compensation applications from customers whose TV screens were cracked after being hit by a toy thrown by children or knocked over by primary school children in an unsuccessful ball game in the living room. Adults also sin. TVs get hit with a broom when sweeping the room or even carelessly changing the curtain rod.

Computer equipment, microwave ovens, robotic vacuum cleaners and other household electronics are missing. Users tend to accidentally push laptops off the table or bed, and spill coffee or other beverages on them. Connected to the mains, they are regularly damaged by lightning.

«Electronics that are regularly used on a daily basis experience damage more often than larger, more expensive insured properties. BTA receives nearly a thousand compensation applications for damage to movable property every year, and the average amount of compensation is quite high. For example, in 2021 we paid an average of 300 euros to one client, while the average amount for the last two years is 450 euros,” the director of BTA’s Insurance Claims Department presents the statistics Kārlis Liepins.

The BTA Property insurance policy provides the opportunity to insure all the belongings in the home – from the wardrobe and smart device to the large corner sofa and wide-screen TV.
