The Importance of Immunization: A Cautionary Tale

By Charlie Ch. Legs

THROUGHOUT January 2022, Dewi had gone back and forth to the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) four times. His son Faruq is sick. Initially, Faruq contracted diphtheria. A few days later got smallpox. Dewi dizzy seven around. The time is taken up by the child.

Entering March, Dewi returned to visit the local hospital. This time, his second child, Heru, was sick. The disease suffered by her second child was the same as that of her first child. Devi also complained.

“Initially his sister was sick, now his sister, I cried,” whispered Dewi when she brought her child to the hospital, which is located quite far from her home.

While at the hospital, Dewi was billed by the doctor, showing her Maternal and Child Health (MCH) book. When shown, the doctor was shaking his head. It seems that Dewi’s two children have never even received immunizations. The child’s nutritional adequacy and weight are also approaching the red line.

Dewi’s problems are in tune with Ayu’s. Ayu, who has one child, must now accept the harsh reality. His son is paralyzed. After being examined by a local doctor, his son had polio. Occasionally the child has difficulty breathing. Ayu also surrendered to the situation.

“I have never brought a child’s immunization at Posyandu,” admitted Ayu.
