Vaccines against the human papillomavirus (HPV) are essential to avoid health risks, such as precancers that can lead to cancer.
This was stated in an interview by Sofía Bernal Silva, research professor at the Faculty of Microbiology and member of the Health Sciences and Biomedicine Research Center of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP), who explained that the vaccines are applied not only to women, but also to girls and boys between nine and 12 years of age.
“Many studies have convincingly and consistently demonstrated the great safety of these vaccines. “Which are mainly indicated to be applied to girls and boys between nine and 12 years of age, because they develop much more antibodies that protect against infection by the virus.”
Bernal Silva stressed that the three vaccines on the market (Gardasil, Cervarix and Gardasil-9) should preferably be applied before sexual life begins, that is, before people are at risk of being exposed to the infection. by the virus, so that the vaccine really gives protection close to 100 percent.
“In the case of adults, it is also recommended for both men and women; they can also be applied to older adults; however, what has been seen in studies is that protection decreases.”
Finally, the Research Professor indicated that there are many types of papillomaviruses and in particular those that infect humans are approximately 40.
In addition to this, he highlighted that the association of lesions in most cases is considered a sexually transmitted disease and the persistence of infection by this virus is associated with cervical cancer in women and cervical cancer continues to be the second cause of death from cancer in women.
