The Importance of Folic Acid in Preventing Stunting in Children: Healthy Food Choices for Pregnant Women

JawaPos.com – For pregnant women, it is important to pay attention to the nutritional adequacy rate (AKG) in daily food menus to prevent stunting in children.

Stunting is a problem of chronic malnutrition caused by a lack of nutritional intake for a long period of time which disrupts a child’s growth, namely their height is shorter than their age standard.

This usually occurs in the first 1000 days of life (HPK) and if not treated will affect the child’s intelligence level and health status as an adult, as quoted by JawaPos.com from the Ministry of Health, Wednesday (6/12).

The Indonesian government is committed to reducing the stunting rate by issuing Presidential Decree Number 72 of 2021 concerning the Acceleration of Reducing Stunting which contains 5 pillars, one of which is increasing food and nutrition security at the individual, family and community levels.

One of the factors causing stunting is low levels of nutritional intake for both pregnant women and children, including folic acid.

Folate is vitamin B9 which plays an important role in preventing neural tube defects in babies such as serious abnormalities in the brain and spinal cord.

Then, in the Journal of the American Medical Association Neurology, folic acid can reduce the risk of autism in children who are exposed to antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy.

On the other hand, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends that mothers consume 600 to 800 micrograms of folate per day during pregnancy.
