JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV- Folic acid or folic acid is one of the vitamins that plays an important role in the health of pregnant women. Quoted from the page Medical News Todayfolic acid is one of the B complex vitamins which is vitamin B9.
This vitamin cannot be produced by the body naturally. So pregnant women need to get folic acid intake from outside the body, for example in the form of supplements or foods that contain folic acid.
Some foods that contain folic acid include green vegetables, oranges, avocados, bananas, jackfruit, nuts, and many more. American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women get at least a folic acid intake of 600 to 800 mcg per day.

Folic acid has various benefits, including the process of forming red cells, increasing growth resistance, and the process of fetal growth and development, including preventing miscarriage.
Launching the page Mayo Clinichere are the benefits of folic acid for pregnant women and the fetus:
1. Increases Red Blood Cell Production
Folic acid can increase the production of red blood cells, so that pregnant women avoid folate deficiency anemia. Folate deficiency anemia can trigger neural tube defects or spina bifida in the fetus, premature birth, low baby weight, and even bleeding.
2. Prevent defects
Consuming folic acid is also highly recommended so that the risk of neural tube defects in babies can be avoided. For example, spina bifida is an abnormality in the spinal cord that causes motor disorders, brain infections and permanent disability.
There is also the risk of anencephaly, which is a disorder when a baby is born without part of the brain and skull bones which can even cause death.
3. Helps Placenta Formation
The placenta is a lining that forms in the uterine area during pregnancy. The placenta functions to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the fetus.
Its function is so great for the growth and development of the fetus, so its formation must be optimal.
4. Reduces the risk of miscarriage
Apart from that, folic acid can also reduce the risk of miscarriage in early pregnancy. It is known that around 50 percent of the risk of early miscarriage is caused by a lack of folic acid in the body.
5. Reduces the risk of congenital heart disease
