The Importance of European Attention to Latin American Elections: Insights from Josep Borrell

Santander (Spain), Aug 21 (EFE).- The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, said on Monday that Europe has to “follow closely what is happening in Latin America”, due to the elections in countries of the region.

Josep Borrelll, at a press conference in Santander (Spain), where he directs the course “Quo vadis Europa?” at the Menéndez Pelayo International University, described Sunday’s electoral results in Ecuador and Guatemala as “important.”

In Ecuador, the correísta Luisa González and the young businessman Daniel Noboa will meet in a second round of the extraordinary presidential elections on October 15.

While Guatemala is heading for a change after the election as president of the progressive Bernardo Arévalo de León, who obtained the highest number of votes in the country’s history.

The leader of European diplomacy stressed that in Latin America “there is a lot of political movement”, hence the convenience of “paying attention” to electoral results such as those of these countries, being from Europe “very respectful of what Latin Americans decide”.

“Now there is a current of the left in Latin America that continues with the results of these elections, but we only want the results to meet those democratic standards and the result is what the citizens want,” he said.

Borrell added that the EU is especially concerned about Venezuela, “where presidential elections have to be held soon”, in 2024 but still without a specific date, “and it would be very important for our relationship with the country that they comply with those democratic standards that allow us to recognize the result”.

The EU did not recognize the result of the legislative elections in Venezuela in 2020, considering that the elections were not “free, fair or democratic”, without the participation of the opposition, with an abstention of close to 70 percent and with two thirds of the votes for a platform that supports President Nicolás Maduro.
