Hong Ik-pyo, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, “The government’s plan to expand the number of medical school students must include the establishment of public medical schools and regional medical schools to expand the essential public and regional medical infrastructure, and the introduction of a regional doctor system.”

Floor Leader Hong said this at the Supreme Council meeting today (18th), saying, “This is not a problem that can be solved simply by increasing the number of medical school students; the content is important.”

Representative Hong pointed out, “Otherwise, there will only be other side effects, such as an increase in the number of doctors in some popular medical fields and a deepening of the problem of distorted medical treatment, such as concentration in the metropolitan area.”

Representative Hong said, “I support the expansion of medical school admissions in principle as it is a task that can no longer be postponed to prevent the collapse of essential medical services such as pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology and to resolve regional imbalances in medical care.”

However, “there are concerns that the expansion of medical schools will be used as a change of scenery card that has nothing to do with medical development or public health,” he said. “It was submitted with a reduction of nearly 100 million won,” he pointed out.

He then emphasized, “The issue of expanding the medical school quota should be an opportunity to correct the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s flawed health care policy,” and added, “We need a full-scale discussion that can produce results.”
